Strategy is one of those over-used words that seems to have lost all sense of meaning. People seem to have strategies for everything…
As a result, I am endlessly asked, “What is strategic planning?”
Fundamentally it is having an answer to the following questions:
- Where are we today?
- Where do we want to be in a month?
- What must we do to do to get there?
Yes, the devil is in the detail.
And, Yes, you tried it before and no-one really bought into it.
And, Yes, it cannot always take account of huge changes in the outside environment.
And, Yes, it can be difficult to do…
But that is probably because you have been doing it wrong.
We’ve been running strategy Awaydays and workshops with clients from Nando’s to Barclays to independent businesses employing tens rather than hundreds of people.
And it works.
It gives the business and the owner-directors a clarity and focus about the who, what, when, where and how of the future.
